Slow bats send Saints to two losses

The Saukville Saints’ offense started the year quietly in two home losses by the same score, 8-2, last weekend.
That overshadowed two strong pitching performances by starters Tom Hartwick and Aaron Brockman.
In the season opener on Saturday, delayed a few weeks due to Covid-19, Hartwick allowed one run through six innings on six hits. He walked three and struck out one.
The Saints broke the ice in the third inning on walks by Brockman and Steve Dickmann. An infield error plated a run.
The Astros tied the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Casey Simon.
In the sixth inning, Saint Taylor Devenport knocked in Max Pruefer to give the Saints the lead. Pruefer had singled and moved to second on a ground out.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning when the Astros scored seven runs on three hits, three walks and a hit batter.
Andrew Biertzer had pitched two scoreless innings, whiffing three and allowing no hits, before running into trouble in the ninth. After allowing six runs and getting two outs, Alex Enteny came in and gave up one run before getting the final out.
Devenport had two hits for the Saints.
Astro Sam Roesler had three hits.
On Sunday, the Saints lost to the Mequon-Thiensville Twins.
The Saints were down, 2-1, through six innings before the Twins plated three in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth.
Brockman allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in seven innings. He walked eight and struck out one.
Down, 2-0, in the third inning, Dickmann singled and Pruefer walked. An infield out moved Dickmann to third, and Devenport knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh inning, a bases-loaded single by Twin Tyler Gross scored two runs, and a sacrifice fly brought in one more.
The Saints scored one run in their half of the seventh. Dickmann walked and Pruefer hit into a fielder’s choice. Dustin Kesner and Elenteny followed with singles to plate Dickmann.
Kesner relieved Brockman, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out three and walking two.
The Saints on Friday, July 10, play the Rubicon Red Sox at 7:30 p.m. at Slinger High School. They host the Cedarburg Mercs at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12.
