It was a pick-your-own highlight at the Big East Conference Wrestling Meet in Cedar Grove last Friday.

Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Chase Heimerman was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler after getting through a four-man bracket of ranked grapplers. Carsen Voskuil won his fourth conference title, the second Rocket to achieve the feat in program history. And Nolan Anzia came back with a takedown at the buzzer to win his first league crown.

The Rockets netted six champions on their way to the team championship. They scored 229.5 points, well ahead of Random Lake’s 150.5.

Coach Quinn Hoopman wasn’t sure if six champions were a school record, but he thought his team may have set a different one.

“Ten in the finals — I don’t know that we’ve ever had that,” he said.

The Rockets had finalists in 10 of the 14 weights.

Voskuil (43-2) sailed through his 138-pound bracket. He beat Fritz Hoffmann (23-14) of Ozaukee in a 19-2 technical fall in 2 minutes, 9 seconds, and in the finals pinned Ethyn Sebo (35-15) of Reedsville in one minute.

“It means a lot,” Voskuil said of his four conference titles.

The only other Rocket to do that was Mike Watry, who won his fourth in 1995.

Voskuil is the second-winningest wrestler in school history, trailing Brandon Garcia. He may catch him.

“It’s going to be close. It’s going to come down to the wire, how I do at state,” Voskuil said.

Heimerman (40-4) at 113 pounds had the toughest road to his first title, but the scores don’t show it.

He beat Carter McCall (24-8) of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah/Howards Grove in a 12-1 major decision and in the finals beat Mishicot’s Jack Kaczrowski (35-12) in a 9-2 decision.

“It means a lot. It took a lot to get here and it feels good to finally get it,” Heimerman said.

He hoped to win a title last year, but he was sick.

Heimerman checked the bracket before the meet and noticed its competitiveness.

“It was definitely a good bracket. All four of us were ranked. Fun time,” he said.

Nolan Anzia (33-12) wasn’t having as much fun in his finals match. He trailed early but kept coming back against Brennen Goble (19-11) of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah/Howards Grove.

With three seconds left, the two wrestlers left the circle and were brought back to the middle for a restart at neutral position. Anzia trailed, 5-4, and needed a takedown to win.

Anzia sprung into action, threw Goble and jumped on top of him. He got his three-point takedown and the win.

Anzia yelled in excitement and faced the home crowd, which was going nuts.

Goble sat on the mat in disbelief and disgust.

“That’s what we work for in practice, a couple of seconds left, gotta give it all you got. That’s what I did,” Anzia said.

“It was amazing, got the team behind you, the town behind you. All respect to Brennen Goble. He’s a hell of a wrestler.”

In the semifinals, Anzia beat Gauge Schaus (24-10) of Mishicot in a 6-0 decision.

Ben Duwell (32-14) moved up to 132 pounds and won a title in 69 seconds. He pinned Mason Maples (2-14) of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah/Howards Grove in the semifinal, and in the final he pinned Ethan Shimek (23-20) of Mishicot in 45 seconds.

“That’s some of the best I’ve seen him wrestle this season. He came out aggressive and it worked out for him,” Hoopman said.

Vince Knowles (39-5) at 144 pounds beat Emett Brodtke (27-8) of Manitowoc Lutheran in a 9-2 decision in the semifinal, and in the final he beat Landen Pekarek (29-6) of Mishicot in a 17-3 major decision. It is his first conference title.

“It means a lot, but there’s a lot left to work for — sectionals, state, team sectionals, team state. I’m looking forward to that,” Knowles said.

Seth Race (41-2) at 175 pounds beat Ozaukee’s Murphy Brown (23-21) in a 16-0 technical fall in three minutes and in the final came back to beat Oostburg’s Axel Dock (32-9) in a 7-5 decision.

“I’ve been working on moving the whole time and I got a little flat footed there, and he ended up taking advantage of that. Then I just stayed composed. I knew I had to come back, and I just wrestled my stuff,” Race said.

The Rockets got three seconds: Landon Heimerman (28-10) at 120 pounds, Josh Anzia (34-9) at 215 pounds and Vadim Misiura (29-15) at 285 pounds.

Ozaukee freshman Sterling Schanen (42-5) pinned Random Lake’s Max Smallish (15-7) in 43 seconds for the Warriors’ only title.

The Rockets host individual sectionals on Saturday, Feb. 14. The top two finishers advance to individual state and the top six teams advance to team sectionals. The Rockets host that on Feb. 21. The top team advances to team state, and one second-place team will be selected to advance.
