Singer/Songwriter concert on May 4 to feature Gorka

John Gorka will perform a Wisconsin Singer/Songwriter Series  concert  at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Unitarian Church North in Mequon.

Gorka is a world-renowned singer and songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania in the late 1970s, where he served as resident emcee and sound man. Before long, he was performing his own songs, mostly as an opener for visiting acts.

His first album, “I Know,” was released in 1987 to popular and critical acclaim. He followed it up with five albums in seven years and toured a great deal, performing with the likes of Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

In addition to 11 albums, Gorka has released a collector’s edition box featuring a high-definition DVD and companion CD called “The Gypsy Life,” and a collection of his greatest hits from the Windham Hill label titled “Pure John Gorka” was released.

In 2010, he released an album with Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse, which landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio.

Katie Dahl and Amilia K. Spicer will be guest performers.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $24 at the door and $10 for students. A discount of $1 per donated food item to a maximum $4 will be given at the door.

Coffee, water, teas and snacks will be available.

Tickets may be purchased at Vines to Cellar Winery in Port Washington, the Stagecoach Inn and Grapes & Tastes, both in Cedarburg, and the North Shore Bank branches in Mequon and Grafton.

For more information, call 457-4399 or visit www.wsss.org.

The church is at 13800 N. Port Washington Rd.
