Sharpshooter is at the head of the Klas

A bizarre season didn’t deter Ozaukee High School senior Gabby Klas, who again was chosen to the Big East Conference second team.

She has been selected as a second-team all-conference player every year of high school.

This season may have been one of the toughest. A coaching change in December created some instability, but varsity assistant coach Linda Weyker was promoted and righted the ship, and Klas continued her artistry behind the three-point arc.

She made 63 bombs — most in the Big East — on 84 attempts (34.2%), extending her career school record over her older sister. Klas drained 229 three-pointers in four years. Greta Klas is in second with 109.

Gabby also led the Warriors in scoring this season with 14.7 points per game — fifth in the Big East — and she grabbed 4.2 rebounds and had 1.4 assists per game. From 15 feet away, Klas went 54-for-73 on free throws (74%).

But there was more to Klas than stunning stats.

“She is a leader both on and off the court and was one that always tried to motivate the team throughout games,” Weyker said.

“Gabby was a very coachable player. She listened to the direction and advice given to her by her coaches.”

Klas ended with 1,247 career points (687 of which came on three-pointers), good for fourth all time at Ozaukee.

The Warriors went 9-10 in the Big East South Division — third place — and finished 12-14 overall. They went 1-1 in the postseason.

Cedar Grove-Belgium junior Alexis Bahr earned Big East honorable mention recognition.

Bahr led the Rockets in scoring at 11.4 points per game, good for 10th in the Big East. She was second on the team in rebounding with 5.6 per game, and she made 1.4 steals per game.

“She was just an all-purpose girl. She was a good offensive and defensive rebounder, and when I needed her to handle the ball, she did that, too,” first-year coach Mike Bikman, who goes by Coach Bik, said.

“Defensively, she always clogged that middle up and took away some of the bigs.”

Bahr, a 5-feet, 9-inch small forward, developed an outside shot at the request of her coach as the season wore on.

“She’s a quick learner,” Bik said.

At times, Bahr carried the team.

“She brought a lot. Kids look up to her. She tried putting a lot on her shoulders and tried to do the best she could,” Bik said.

The Rockets finished 5-14 in the Big East South, good for fifth place, and 8-17 overall.
