Senior night near miss

The Ozaukee High School boys’ basketball team closed out its regular season with a two-point loss against one of the top teams in the Big East South Division last Thursday.

The Warriors were edged, 48-46, by the visiting Sheboygan Christian Eagles on senior night in Fredonia, as Connor Rennicke’s last-second three-pointer rimmed out.

“Losing a game is tough but losing on senior night is extra tough,” coach Bob Domach said.

“I would have liked to have won the game for the seniors. Matt (Miller), Braxton (Gahan), Mason (Norwood), Jesse (Schauer) and Tyler (Mueller) have done so much for the program that it would have been nice to reward them with a victory.

“We fought really hard. We had a chance to win at the end of the game against the second-place team in the conference, that’s what you want.”

Sophomore Bret Hamm poured in a career-high 26 points but got little scoring assistance.

Only two other Ozaukee players scored more than twice in the game, and it wasn’t until the three-minute, 24-second mark in the second half that any other player scored more than four points.  

Hamm’s total included a trio of three-pointers and eight rebounds.

The Warriors’ offense was ice-cold in the first half, and Ozaukee trailed, 21-16, at the break.

Michael Modahl scored nine points in the first half for the Eagles.

The home team slowly chipped away at the lead early in the second half.  

After a three-pointer and a two-pointer  by Hamm and a three-pointer by Matt Miller, Ozaukee held a short-lived lead, at 28-27, with 12:03 to play.

The visitors went on an 8-2 run to retake a five-point lead at the 9:05 mark.  

Ozaukee took a 44-43 lead with 2:37 to play when Gahan scored off a nifty pass from Hamm.  The Eagles outscored Ozaukee, 5-2, the rest of the way to earn the win.  

Gahan finished with 11 rebounds and eight points. Matt Miller scored six points.

Modahl led the Eagles with 19 points. Noah Heinen added 11.
