Semi overturns, closes I-43 lanes near Belgium Wednesday
The southbound lanes of I-43 near Belgium were closed for two hours Wednesday morning after a semi carrying paper products overturned, pinning its driver inside.
The crash occurred just after 8 a.m. south of Highway D in the Town of Belgium, blocking both southbound lanes, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The driver, a 61-year-old man with an Ohio driver’s license, was extricated by Belgium Fire and Rescue and was transported to Aurora Hospital in Grafton with nonlife-threatening injuries.
The truck contained 31,000 pounds of paper products, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
The semi-trailer was removed by 10:06 a.m. and lanes were reopened.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, the Sheriff’s Office said. An investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Pastrol is ongoing.
Also responding were the Port Washington Fire Department and Ozaukee County Highway Department.
