Saints drop two at home to the Astros in Rock River League play

The Saukville Saints improved over the course of a home doubleheader against the Hustisford Astros last Sunday, but the results were the same.

The Astros won the opener, 14-0, and the second game, 9-4.

In the first game, the Astros scored four runs in the first and seventh innings, and they blew the game open with eight runs in the fifth.

The first four runs came on six walks. One run in the third inning came on four walks. One run in the fourth inning came with the help of the Astros’ first hit of the game.

In the fifth inning, four hits, three walks and two errors helped plate the eight runs.

On the mound, Derek Pieper held the Saints to five hits and one walk in five innings. Saint Simon Bares had two hits.

Aaron Roeseler had two hits for the Astros.

Both teams had five hits.

Brendon Zimdars took the loss for the Saints, allowing 11 runs (eight earned) and three hits, walking 16 and whiffing two in four innings. Mike Sherrick allowed three runs (one earned) and two walks in one inning.

In the second game, the Astros got two runs in the first inning on two singles and an error.

The Saints tied it in their half of the first inning. Steve Dickmann led off with a single and moved to second on an error. Zimdars walked, and Bares singled to center to load the bases.

A wild pitch scored Dickmann, and Jared Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to score the other run.

The Astros scored four runs in the third inning on four singles, a walk and hit batter. They tacked on one run in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead.

The Saints rallied for two runs in the fifth inning. Dickmann and Bares walked, and with two outs Mike Mueller drew another free pass. Brockman followed with an RBI single, and Brock Henke walked to plate the other run.

A two-run homer by Dan Sabin pushed the lead to 9-4 in the seventh inning.

The Saints loaded the bases in the seventh on singles by Mitchell and Brockman and catcher interference on Henke, but they couldn’t score.

Brockman and Mitchell each had two hits.

Sabin, Jordan Scherr and Josh Hennessy each had two hits for the Astros.

Brockman went all seven innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) and 12 hits, walking six and whiffing five.

Collin Grud allowed two unearned runs and four hits in four innings, walking two and whiffing three. Griff Litzeau allowed two earned runs, one hit and walked four in 2/3 of an inning. Austin Massey allowed two hits and whiffed four in 2-1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Saints, 1-15, play at Hartford (7-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and close the regular season by hosting Cedarburg (7-9) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7.
