Ruth Johnson

Ruth Johnson, beloved daughter, mother, grandmother and faithful member of the community, passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2023, at Cedar Grove Gardens, where she was a resident. She was 96 years old.

Ruth was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Cedarburg, Wis., the daughter of John and Elizabeth (nee Hemlock) Lennartz. She spent her childhood in the Cedarburg area before following her faith and attending school in Milwaukee at St. Joseph’s Convent School.

Ruth’s commitment to her faith was unwavering, as she dedicated her life to serving others through her role as a secretary/receptionist and bookkeeper for St. Mary’s Church in Port Washington, where she worked tirelessly for more than 40 years.

Her devotion extended beyond the confines of the church walls as she compassionately served as a Eucharistic minister for the elderly and homebound, bringing them solace and support during their times of need.

In her free time, Ruth enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought her immense joy. She possessed a graceful swing on the golf course. Ruth’s nimble fingers were adept at creating beautiful crochet pieces. She was also an avid bowler, finding camaraderie and friendly competition in the lanes. In her younger years, Ruth reveled in the thrill of playing tennis matches.

Ruth leaves behind a large family to celebrate her legacy including her children Kathy (Keith) Kichura, Mark (Donna) Johnson, Teri (Joe) Yovanovich, the late John (Julie) Johnson, the late Jeff Johnson, Tom Johnson, the late Jeanne (fiancee Bill Malmstadt) Johnson and Jim (Tina) Johnson.

She is further survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson Joel Yovanovich, siblings Joe and John Lennartz, Bette (the late Paul) Meyer and Rosemary Erickson and her former husband Lloyd “Sonny” Johnson Jr.

A visitation for friends and family will take place on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. John XXIII Catholic Parish, St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5:30 p.m.  Father Patrick Wendt will preside over the Mass.

She will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Port Washington.

In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family suggests memorials to St. John XXIII Parish in Port Washington.

Ruth’s family would like to thank the caring and supportive staff of Cedar Grove Gardens and Sharon S. Richardson Hospice, along with Dr. Anna Kleyman and her staff.
