Rough start to new year

The new year got off to a rough start for the Ozaukee High School boys’ basketball team Monday night at Reedsville.

The Panthers edged the Warriors, 50-48.

“It was a tough game to lose,” Ozaukee coach Bob Domach said.

Late in the game, the Warriors led by three points twice, the first after Simon Bares drained a pair of free throws with 3 minutes, 24 seconds to play. At that point, Ozaukee led, 42-39.

A short time later, Jesse Schauer scored a three-point basket to give Ozaukee a 45-42 lead.

The Panthers then scored eight straight points to pull ahead, 50-45.

Noah Miller drained a three-pointer from well beyond the arc in the final seconds to trim the deficit to two points, but Ozaukee was unable to score again.

“The common theme in all of the losses this year is too many turnovers. We can’t afford to give the ball up that much,” Domach said.

The Warriors had 16 turnovers.

Ozaukee took a lead before the game started. A Reedsville player slammed the ball and hung on the rim during warm-ups and received a technical foul.  Miller made one of two free throws before the first half.

The game remained within five points either way, with the Warriors trailing most of the contest. At the break, Reedsville led, 26-24.

Bares led the Warriors with 20 points and six rebounds. He also played strong defense.

“Simon Bares did a great job stopping Reedsville’s top scorer,” Domach stated.

Despite a cold night offensively, Miller scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. No other Warrior scored more than four points.

Reedsville was led by Johnathan Timm with 14 points and Zach Dvoracheck with 10.

“We have a lot of season left and we will continue to work and improve,” Domach said.

The Warriors, 3-5 in the Big East Conference South Division, host Random Lake (4-4 Big East) on Friday. They play at Mishicot (0-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
