St. Nick was late but Santa was early for the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School girls’ basketball team.
It took nine games for the Rockets to earn their first victory of the season, and they got it on the home court of a rival.
The Rockets beat Random Lake, 56-43, on Dec. 16, largely behind a trio on offense.
Arden Getschman scored 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting and made five of the Rockets’ 23 steals. Kami Horn scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made six steals. Gracie Schmidt scored 15 points and made five steals. Laila Arrowood had nine rebounds.
“Kami Horn and Arden Getschman stepped up offensively. Gracie Schmidt did a great job distributing the ball well and being impactful,” coach Nicole Depies said.
For the Rams, Lexi Gruman came in averaging 16.5 points per game, but the Rockets held her to half that.
“Claire Prinsen and Raygan Bialzik did a great job defensively on their best player, keeping her to only eight points,” Depies said.
“It was a great overall team win for us. We’ve been struggling to play two halves of basketball and we were able to accomplish that.”
The Rockets host West Bend West on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Ozaukee looks to stop two-game skid
Ozaukee last Friday saw a 21-18 halftime lead evaporate at Howards Grove in a 58-39 loss.
“We started out strong. We handled their press well in the first half,” coach Linda Weyker said. “Howards Grove came out in the second half pressing again and we struggled a bit more with too many turnovers. We continue to have balanced scoring from our players but could not regain the lead.”
Mya Schroeder scored 13 points and had six rebounds. Savannah Quade had 10 points, and Bianca Marini had seven. Kenedeigh Harness had seven rebounds.
Ozaukee, 5-3, hosts Kiel on Monday, Jan. 5.
