River History Day to make its debut Saturday

A celebration of the Milwaukee River and the role it has played in the development of Saukville will be held Saturday, Oct. 16.

The inaugural River History Day will offer attendees the chance to learn about the historical importance of the river, participate in river-related activities and hear from a variety of speakers.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crossroads Museum, 200 N. Mill St.

Events include a musical performance by folk artist David HB Drake from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a presentation by original Crossroads Rendezvous founder Randy Miller and Native American stories and a crafts session by Wisconsin author Karen Hartman.

Dan Helm of the Saukville Department of Public Works will speak about storm drainage and the Milwaukee River, and a shoreline cleanup will be held by Riveredge Nature Center.

Attendees may try their hand at target casting on the river and view vintage fire trucks in the Crossroads Museum.

Buffalo burgers, hot dogs and traditional fry bread will be sold.

The event has been organized by Riveredge Nature Center, Community Rivers Program, Crossroad Rendezvous and the Saukville Historical Society.
