Renaming the post office for a local hero

A ceremony was held at the Port Washington post office on Saturday to rename the federal building in honor of Joe Demler, a World War II veteran and Nazi prisoner of war who spent much of his career working at the Port post office, serving as assistant postmaster. Demler (below left) became one of the faces of the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight and in 2008 took the group’s inaugural flight to Washington, D.C., where he laid a wreath at the World War II Memorial. Sen. Ron Johnson (below right) and Mayor Ted Neitzke applauded as a plaque honoring Demler was uncovered as Demler’s widow Therese (right) looked on. Photos by Sam Arendt
