Recognizing lifesaving heroes

Ozaukee County Sheriff Jim Johnson (from left) presented lifesaving awards to three deputies, Alexander Nelson, Steven Henning and Jamison Tauer, during a Dec. 15 ceremony at the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office. Tauer was  honored for saving the life of an 86-year-old Lake Church man who fell off a lawnmower on June 12 and was then run over by the machine. A tiller attached to the mower sliced into the man’s bicep, causing excessive bleeding. Tauer applied a tourniquet, stopping the blood flow and saving the man’s life. Henning and Nelson were at the jail when a female inmate began choking on a piece of food. They each performed the Heimlich maneuver, eventually dislodging the food, and continued to aid the woman, who did not require any further lifesaving measures.                                                                    Photo by Sam Arendt
