Program to explain botanical names

“Botanical Names — What’s in a Name” is the topic for a 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, program at the Mequon Nature Preserve sponsored by the Ozaukee Master Gardeners.

Horticulturist Zannah Crowe will teach participants how to decode the hidden descriptions, origins and relationships of plants revealed by their scientific name. 

Crowe’s passion for gardening began in childhood as she planted flowers alongside her father. 

She holds a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been employed in the plant industry for more than 40 years. 

She managed the perennial plant division of a rare plant nursery in Connecticut for 12 years, was executive director of a community gardening program in West Bend for three years, managed the garden center at Monches Farm for 20 years and is currently employed with W. & E. Radtke, a wholesale perennial nursery in Germantown. 

At home, she tends a 1.5 acre property with her husband Bob, a landscape architect. 

There is no charge for the program, but advanced registration is suggested.
