Potter is artist of the month at Cultural Center
Potter Mary Kandy Gibson is the March artist-in-residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Gibson creates pots that are visually pleasing and unique in character but also useful in everyday life. Each piece of stoneware pottery reflects her enjoyment for throwing, carving, sketching, embellishing, creating and using. Most of her pieces are wheel-thrown.
Gibson has worked as a teacher of art and special education and a school administrator. For 20 years she taught art and clay to children at a summer boys camp. She is now retired.
In 2008, she joined the Cedarburg Artists Guild and started participating in art fairs, studio tours and gallery shows.
Her forms are usually organic in nature, which stems from her love of the balance observed in nature, and her personal preference for a fluid line.
She will demonstrate her art forms at the center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 1, 4, 8, 9, 15, 16, 18, 22 and 23.
She will also hold a workshop, “Introduction to Sgraffito Pottery,” from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 19. Participants will be given a 10-inch plate in a leather hard state (moist clay that’s firm enough to hold) that has been covered in a black engobe. Participants will transfer their ideas to the plate using sgraffito techniques. Each participant will select a color glaze for the rim.
The plates will then be taken back to the studio to dry, fire and glaze. Plates will be ready for pickup two weeks later.
