Port volleyball wins first NSC match

The Port Washington High School volleyball team swept Whitefish Bay on the road, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22, in its North Shore Conference opener last Thursday.

Elyse Karrels had 12 kills, Carolyn Lippe and Lillian Merow each had eight, and Jennacy Wille had seven.

Karrels had seven blocks. Sydney Hoeft had 18 digs, Lippe had nine and Ari Canseco had eight. Hoeft had 39 assists.

Port went 3-2 in a tournament at Catholic Memorial on Aug. 27. They beat West Bend East, 25-16, 13-25, 15-10; East Troy, 25-11, 25-22; and Martin Lutheran, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12. They lost to Oak Creek, 25-18, 25-18; and New Berlin West, 25-21, 25-17.

At a New Berlin West Invite last Saturday, Port went 4-0. The Pirates beat Shorewood, 25-12, 25-19; Waukesha North, 25-19, 26-24; Lake Country Lutheran, 25-20, 25-23; and Franklin, 25-23, 8-25, 15-13.

Port hosts West Bend East on Thursday, Sept. 8, plays at a Germantown invite on Saturday, Sept. 10, and at Nicolet on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Grafton falls to West Bend West

Grafton lost its home and NSC opener to West Bend West, 25-12, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21.

The Hawks were down, 12-0, in the first set and 12-4 in the second before battling back to ties at 16 and 18. Grafton had leads of 9-5, 15-10, 18-16 and 20-19 before winning the third set. They had a 9-8 lead in the final set before falling behind 17-11. They got to 20-17 before losing.

Ella Johnston-Fodor had 12 kills, Leah Maciejewski had eight, Anna Holzer had six and Avery Smith had five.

Maciejewski had 16 digs, Allison Viesselmann had 14, Emily Pitre had 10 and Grace Viesselmann had eight. Kaitlin Muecke had 31 assists.

The Hawks host Cedarburg on Thursday, Sept. 8, at a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10, and at Whitefish Bay on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Ozaukee starts out slowly

Ozaukee’s volleyball team started the season 1-4, beating Oshkosh Lourdes 25-21, 23-25, 15-12, in a tournament on Aug. 30. The Warriors lost to Living Word Lutheran, Roncalli, Algoma and Tri-County of Plainfield.

Ozaukee hosts Sheboygan Lutheran on Thursday, Sept. 8.
