Port track teams excel in the breeze
Experience wasn’t necessarily necessary for the Port Washington High School girls’ track and field team last Friday at the St. Norbert College Elite meet.
The Pirates took fourth place with 65 points while they were missing several team members. Wausau West won the 16-team meet with 175 points.
“Some less experienced runners took the mantle,” coach Joe Adamak said.
Noel Konitzer won the pole vault by clearing 8 feet, 6 inches, and Bethany Stacey won the 3,200-meter run in 12 minutes, 6 seconds.
Jill Cavanaugh was second in teh 3,200 in 12:36.
The 3,200 relay team of Emma Goodman, Cavanaugh, Mira Stimac and Stacey was second in 10:44.
The 1,600 relay team of summer Normille, Isabel Reyes, Goodman and Grace Schumacher was third in 4:31.
The 800 relay team of Normille, Julia Greisch, Reyes and Schumacher was third in 1:55.
The Port boys tied for fifth place with Sheboygan South, both scoring 60 points. Wausau West won the 15-team meet with 175.5 points.
Jake Lippe took second in the long jump with a personal-best 21-2.25 in his first measure jump of the season.
Mason Raash was second in the 2-kilometer steeplechase in 7:03. The event has five barriers to hurdle with one having a water pit after it.
Brett Grisar was fourth in the 3,200 in 10:44. Will Stopczynski was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 43.56.
The 3,200 relay of Jacob Deheck, Ben Pasten, Gabe Pasten and Isaac Bensen was fourth in 9:18.
Stopczynski was fifth in the long jump with 20-4.5.
The 400 relay team of Deron Spicer, Xavier Deal, Lippe and Mitchell Niemeyer was fourth in 47.93.
“I was pleased to see that our team was able to score points in 15 out of the 19 events,” coach Mark Pasten said.
He was less pleased to see the wind lift the team’s tent into the air and put it down 30 yards away on the track.
Grafton’s meet last Saturday at Waukesha North was canceled due to weather.
The Pirates and Black Hawks were to compete in the North Shore Conference Relays in Hartford on Wednesday.
