Port tops NSC foe with five pins
It was a dominating performance for the Port Washington High School wrestling team at Homestead on Dec. 23, and coach Angelo LaRosa is thankful for the seven matches in a 60-18 victory.
A few Pirates won with quick pins in matches that LaRosa said Homestead coach Ernie Millard could have forfeited instead.
“He could have easily put some guys on junior varsity. Props to him for putting some kids out there instead of forfeiting weights,” LaRosa said.
“He really wants to get kids matches, and so do we.”
Port won five of the seven matches wrestled.
At 132 pounds, Brady Krueger pinned Cole Movsession in 1 minute, 2 seconds.
At 220 pounds, Shem Castillo pinned Edgar Prunskus in 1:42.
At 120 pounds, Brodie Brecke pinned Zack LaSage in 40 seconds.
Port’s Schumachers (no relation) were on the mat for less than a minute.
At 170 pounds, Lucas Schumacher pinned Deven Schmits in 26 seconds, and at 126 pounds Kaiden Schumacher pinned Brenden Canapa in 28 seconds.
At 160 pounds, Homestead’s Josiah LaSage beat Diego Armendariz, 5-3.
At 152 pounds, Highlander Patrick Barger pinned Nate Streiff in 2:30.
“I think in general it was a nice effort. They’re doing things in matches that we’re working on in practice — techniques, positions, moves,” LaRosa said.
“Overall, the boys wrestled hard.”
In exhibition matches, held to give wrestlers more experience since most of this season’s weekend tournaments were canceled due to Covid-19, Port’s Streiff, Alex Wishki and Levi Snodgrass all pinned their opponents.
The Pirates were to wrestle at Cedarburg on Wednesday and host a possible quadrangular meet on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Some restrictions on how many teams may compete at one time have been lifted for the new year.
“We’re on our fourth schedule now. We’re just kind of rolling with it,” LaRosa said.
Young Grafton falls at Hartford, 63-15
Hartford racked up seven forfeits on their way to beating Grafton at home, 63-15, on Dec. 23.
The Black Hawks scored two pins. At 152 pounds, Jacob Betla pinned Tim Lepien in 1:23.
At 195 pounds, Nathan Krause pinned Cody Kamholz in 3:07.
At 160 pounds, Cameron Jacobs beat Noah Deibert, 11-5.
The Hawks, coach Mike Dodge said, are still learning.
“My message hasn’t really changed much. Between dual meets (a loss to Port), we came back, talked about a bunch of things that our young guys and even some of our veteran guys aren’t doing. It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish, and we need to keep making these adjustments,” he said.
“Overall, we’re just really young in several weights.”
The Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 6, go to Slinger to wrestle the host, Cedarburg and Homestead. Dodge said he isn’t sure if it’s a dual-meet or small-group format.
He said he likes the idea of getting more matches and experience.
“I think this is a good thing. This is what people were hoping would happen,” Dodge said.
During a typical season, the Hawks could have had 23 individual matches at this point. Instead, they’ve wrestled two of three dual meets. Whitefish Bay canceled due to Covid-19.
“It’s just such a different year,” Dodge said.
