Port tennis wins home opener after steamy quadrangular

The home opener started on the right foot for the Port Washington High School tennis team last Thursday.

The Pirates beat Sheboygan South, 5-2.

The highlight, coach Melonie Zielinski said, came from No. 2 singles player Hannah Stopczynski. She beat Lauren Binversie, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

She stayed within the match to win the second and third set. Hannah’s consistent groundstrokes and placement helped secure the win,” Zielinski said.

At No. 3 singles, Madelyn Ksioszk nearly had a dramatic win herself but lost to Catherin Flores, 4-6, 6-3, 12-14.

“Madelyn lost in a third set but played an incredible match and fought until the last point,” Zielinski said.

At No. 1 doubles, Pirates Ashley Zygowski and Grace Neitzke beat Olivia Zielger and Julia Santana, 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Port’s Jennifer Boccio and Gaby Ortiz were equally as dominant, beating Caitlin Vang and Angelina Lao, 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Sheboygan South’s Samikshya Bhatta beat Ally Schueller, 6-2, 6-3.

Port’s Abby Doll at No. 4 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Alena Schlenvogt and Lydia Weyker won by forfeits.

At Aug. 24’s quadrangular meet at Mukwonago, heat of more than 100 degrees on the court caused coaches to only play two matches of the scheduled three.

Port lost to the hosts, 6-1, and Westosha Central, 7-0. The Pirates’ win came Ksioszk and Schlenvogt at No. 3 doubles. They beat Lisa Kuhlmann and Lorena Marrari, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

“They used net play and placement shots to secure the only win of the day,” Zielinski said.

The rest of the Pirates didn’t win a set as Zielinski searched for a winning lineup.

“We competed well in spots,” Zielinski said, highlighting Ortiz, who lost, 6-2, 6-3, to Jamie Sessody of Mukwonago at No. 2 singles.

“Gaby committed to every single point and had extremely close game scores,” she said.

Port was to open North Shore Conference play on Tuesday by hosting West Bend West. They play at Homestead on Thursday and host Milwaukee Lutheran at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8.
