Port tennis team made progress throughout season

The team’s record may not show it, but Port Washington High School girls’ tennis coach Melonie Zielinski said she saw encouraging results from every player this season.

“Each player came out with a positive attitude and a willingness to improve and perform,” she said.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Tess Schueller and junior Ashley Zygowski “played effective and competitive all season long. They worked and moved as a team while also using put-away shots at the net to their advantage.”

Senior Kaylee Doll held down the No. 1 singles spot for the third straight season.

“No matter whom she played, Kaylee always fought for every single point. Kaylee showed immense growth in her tennis game in terms of her strategy and put away shots,” Zielinski said.

Schueller and Doll were the team’s captains. Other seniors were Hope Christianson, JoJo Czarnecki, Maddy Hughes and Zaara Rehman.

The Pirates ended their season Oct. 12 at the 11-team South Milwaukee sub-sectional. North Shore Conference teams took the top four spots, with Nicolet scoring 24 points, followed by Whitefish Bay’s 20, Homestead’s 16 and Cedarburg’s eight.

Port didn’t score a point or play as well as it could have at times, Zielinski said, but the outlook is still bright.

“Our program is heading in a positive direction. We continue to see a lot of strides, growth, and competitiveness in our tennis program,” she said.
