Port, Grafton wrap up their tennis seasons

The Port Washington High School girls’ tennis team played well in its final four North Shore Conference matches last week against high-end competition.

The Pirates’ lone win came at the hands of rival Grafton. Port won, 6-1, on Sept. 28.

The Black Hawks’ only victory came at No. 1 singles, where Hailey Markoff beat Ally Schueller, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, Madelina Figarino beat Lacy Greicar, 7-6 (8), 6-3. At No. 3, Abby Doll beat Bryanna Mursch, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4, Lydia Weyker beat Linnea Wheeler, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles, Gaby Ortiz and Grace Neitzke beat Paige Yan and Meghan Scott, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2, Jennier Boccio and Alena Schlenvogt beat C.C. Courture and Sunnie Manchandani, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3, Madelyn Ksioszk and Abby Bley beat Ella Ellis and Bella Windsor, 6-2, 6-1.

Port lost, 5-2, to Slinger, on Sept. 27.

Weyker beat Leah Tomaz at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Boccio and Schlenvogt beat Ella Gray and Emory Kearns, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.

Port was swept by Cedarburg on Sept. 27 and by Whitefish Bay on Sept. 28.

“Our last remaining conference matches went really well. All the girls fought hard, moved the ball around and competed well,” coach Melonie Zielinski said.

At the Division 1 Manitowoc Lincoln Sub-sectional on Monday, Port had a pair of doubles teams make it out of the first round.

At No. 3, Boccio and Schlenvogt beat Cassie Pilling and Elise Friedel of Plymouth, 6-0, 6-1, and nearly won the next match.

Sarah Redell and Hannah Williams of Sheboygan North won, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.

At No. 4, Ksioszk and Bley beat Reese Tevsh and Belle Hagameier of Sheboygan North, 6-0, 7-5. Then Cedarburg’s Sarah Curran and Zoey Schiek won, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1, Neitzke and Ortiz nearly advanced, losing to Julia English and Callie Alfonsi of Sheboygan North, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.

Port’s singles’ players didn’t win a set.

For Grafton at the Division 2 Sheboygan Falls Sub-sectional, Meghan Scott at No. 2 singles beat Jezel Brunner of Howards Grove before losing to Ellie Wojahn of Mayville.

At No. 1 doubles, Markoff and Greicar nearly advanced, losing to Lauren Liethen and Anna Willis of St. Mary’s Springs, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

At No. 3, Couture and Manchandani lost to Ruth Brewer and Nicole Roecker of Waupun, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4.
