The Port Washington boys’ tennis team went one up and two down last week.

On the positive side, the Pirates knocked off Sheboygan South, 4-3, on Saturday.

Port swept the doubles matches. At No. 1, Thomas Garant and Matt Huebner defeated Miguel Rodriguez and Ivan Pulido, 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2, Shane McConahy and Tanner Sauer beat Kongmeng Yang and Caleb Moua, 6-4, 5-7, 10-0. At No. 3, Bryce Bertler and Cale Theis downed Henry Lee and Eddie Vang, 7-6 (2), 7-0.

At No. 3 singles, Port’s Jake Schmit beat Fuchi Yang, 6-2, 1-6, 10-0.

The Pirates closed the gap in a rematch with Cedarburg after a 5-2 loss earlier in the season but couldn’t quite get over the hump in a 4-3 defeat.

At No. 1 singles, Port’s Aaron Montreal beat Connor Kuck, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 3, Schmit defeated Jack Poehlmann, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 4, Isaac Welton beat Ben Landrum, 6-3, 7-0.

The Pirates lost to Hartford, 6-1, on May 3. Montreal had the only win at No. 1 singles, beating Tanner Brault, 6-3, 7-0.

“Aaron Montreal was able to pull out two key wins against Hartford and Cedarburg. He stayed within himself and made key placement shots to rattle his opponents,” Port coach Melonie Zielinski said.

“Isaac Welton used strong powerful serves to stay in his three matches.”
