Pirate gymnasts off to a hot start
Port Washington High School gymnastics coach Gale Sigler is excited that about half of the 24 Pirates in the program are consistently competing on the varsity level, and multiple gymnasts are already yielding high returns.
Port on Dec. 17 beat West Bend Co-op, 132.525 to 125.55.
“It has been many years since Port has won a conference dual meet, so this was extra exciting for the team,” Sigler said.
One of the highlights was freshman Chloe Barber scoring 8.95 on beam.
Behind Barber, Vivi Styles had 8.25 and Grace Baumann and Sabrina Eixenberger each had 8.15.
“Good connections and staying on beam proved to be key,” Sigler said.
Returning state qualifier Maddie Mellesmoen led the Pirates on vault with 8.55. Eixenberger had 8.2, Barber had 8.15 and Styles had 8.05.
Barber led on bars with 8.35. Mellesmoen had 8.325, Addie Wellenstein had 8.075, and Styles had 8.05.
Barber led on floor exercise with 8.6. Styles had 8.4, Mellesmoen had 8.15 and Bauman had 8.125.
“It was so much fun to see the girls’ excitement and the energy that they had throughout the meet. Each success was contagious and made it a really great meet,” Sigler said. “This was a good way to head into the holiday break and can serve as motivation to keep reaching for their next individual and team goal.”
Port started the season with a tight dual meet against Brookfield Central on Dec. 10. Port lost, 129.45 to 128.175.
“To start the season at 128 points is incredible and very encouraging for what our end of season goals can look like,” Sigler said.
Styles led on vault with 7.95, beam with 8.55 and floor with 8.35. Barber led on bars with 8.225.
On Dec. 12, Port took second at the six-team Jefferson/Cambridge Invite, scoring 126.2 points. West Allis/Divine Savior Holy Angels won with 128.85 points.
Barber was third in the all-around with 32.65 points. Styles was fifth with 31.375.
Mellesmoen was second on vault with 8.5, and Styles tied for sixth with 8.2.
Barber was third on bars with 8.4 and Styles was fourth with 8.325.
Barber, Mellesmoen and Eixenberger all tied for fifth on beam with 7.9.
Barber was fourth on floor exercise with 8.3. Styles was sixth with 8.1.
“It is a pleasure to be able to work with such a seasoned group of gymnasts and I am very optimistic for their future successes,” Sigler said.
Port hosts a Glacier Trails Conference meet on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
