PHOTO OP-ED: Sheep saga takes a turn

Avid social media followers of the two sheep, apparent escapees from a farm, that have been roaming through Ozaukee County for more than a month haven’t heard much in the way of new sightings lately, but here is a late-breaking report from a verified observer: The pair has broken up. The more dominant black sheep has left his tawny companion, who seems to have settled in a wooded rural area north of Port Washington. The remaining animal is less skittish than its absent friend and paused in its grazing long enough to show off an impressive set of horns and a prodigious wool coat. Though full of burs from life in the wild, the thick wool seems to have made the sheep well suited for the recent frigid weather and supports conjecture that it is an icelandic sheep, a breed known to be large and hardy.           Photo by Bill Schanen IV
