Petals in Port flower walk set for Saturday in downtown Port
Downtown Port Washington will be awash in flowers on Saturday, May 9 — but these won’t be locally grown blooms.
These handmade felted flowers will be given away by select merchants as part of Petals in Port, a new event intended to celebrate Mother’s Day and the start of spring.
“We wanted to have something to encourage people to get out with the women in their lives to celebrate them and do something fun, and also stop at the different shops to see what’s going on,” Amanda Scholz, owner of the Purple Turtle Artisan Collective and organizer of the event, said.
The event, which she hopes will become an annual tradition, will have as many as 100 people heading through downtown Port from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, stopping at 12 participating merchants who will have “tea and bite” samples.
“It will be tea party-like,” Scholz said. “Some will have sweet bites, some will have savory ones.”
Five of the stops will have teas supplied by the Spice and Tea Exchange in Port, she said.
At seven of the shops, participants can pick up a felted flower.
Each store will have one type of flower, but of varying colors. The flowers include s peony, Icelandic poppy, wildflower, Billy buttons and, in two shops, greenery sprays.
The flowers were handmade by a Milwaukee artist, Scholz said.
In addition, a number of shops will have special deals and sales.
For example, Verbosity Bookhouse will have card readings, and host Port Washington Yoga, she said, and Halo Artisan Skin Care will have a specialty spray for sale that people can use to give their bouquets scent.
The Purple Turtle will have extra stems for sale on Sunday, Scholz said.
The event will begin at the Purple Turtle, where people will check in, and end there with participants getting their bouquets wrapped.
Participants may also turn in their receipts from any purchases at participating retailers, and for every $10 spent they will receive a chance at a giveaway.
Check in will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Scholz said the event was proposed by former Port Main Street Inc. Executive Director Kristina Tadeo, and while many people liked the idea no one took the reins and organized the event until now.
“I said I’m just going to do it,” she said.
Tickets are $28 for just the tea and bites walk and $45 for the flower walk and the refreshments. So far, about 60 of the 100 tickets available have been sold, Scholz said.
