Park and Rec has full slate of programs planned

The Grafton Parks and Recreation Department is holding various programs for children in the next couple of months.

After-school STEM class (science, technology, engineering and math) for children ages 5 to 10 will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Woodview Elementary School art room.

The class focuses on teaching the fundamentals of engineering using LEGO Technic sets. Projects may include drawbridges, motorized cars, amusement park rides, cranes and catapults.

Computer Explorers is providing the instructor.

The cost is $18 and advance registration is required.

STEM classes to fill spring break week

STEM classes over spring break will be offered in the Cedarburg Community Gym from Monday through Thursday, March 21 to 24. All are open to children ages 7 to 12 and cost $50 each.

Classes include:

LEGO BricQ will have students explore physical science with a sports context from 9 to 10 a.m.

STREAM Sampler (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts and math) will be held from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

The class will explore a different STREAM concept each day, including coding, robotics and engineering, video game design, catapults, digital movie making, LOGO programming, GPS, snap circuits, creative writing and art exploration.

Motor Madness — Remote Control Machines will have students build their own remote-control vehicles, including excavators, movers, lifters and graders.

It will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

LEGO Trifecta: Ninjago and Bionicles and Free Build will have students build Ninjago spinner projects, Bionicles and LEGO builds.

It will be held from 1 to 2 p.m.

Technology Trio has students rotate through three programs. They may choose WeDo Robotics, Gears, Gears and Gears, Animated Movie Making, LEGO Motorized Datca kits and coding projects.

It will be held from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Children can learn chess

Chess camp for children in grades two through eight will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, March 21 to 25, at the Zaun Pavilion in Lime Kiln Park.

The class is open to those new to chess or with a rating no higher than 600.

Students will be taught fundamentals, including opening strategy, the seven basic checkmates and tactics such as forks, pins and discovered check.

At the end of the week, a five-round tournament will be held with the top three players awarded trophies. All other participants will receive medals.

Participants will receive a membership to www.chesskid.com.

The camp is instructed by Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation.

The cost is $75. Advance registration is required.
