Ozaukee sheriff’s deputies to crack down on distracted driving
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Mequon Police Department will crack down on distracted drivers on Friday, Nov. 15, including those who text or engage in other activities while driving that cause them to take their eyes off the road.
“It is our goal to make Ozaukee County a safe place for all drivers on our roadways,” Ozaukee Sheriff Jim Johnson said.
A driver going 55 mph who is distracted for less than five seconds will travel the length of a football field.
Data show that one in five crashes involve distracted driving. In 2015, there were 24,089 car crashes related to distracted driving in Wisconsin.
A citation for inattentive driving or texting while driving carry fines of $187.90 and four points.
