Ozaukee High School freshman Caitlyn Weyker had a breakout game Dec. 22 at Random Lake, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the energetic Rams in a 61-45 defeat.

Weyker scored 17 points — including three three-pointers — pulled down seven rebounds and grabbed four steals.

“Caitlyn had a great game offensively for us. It has been a goal to get away from a one-player, one-dimensional type of team and have a different leading scorer each game based on our offensive scheme,” Ozaukee coach Jason Pollard said.

“We have been fortunate to succeed at that so far this year and this happened to be Caitlyn’s game where she led our team.  Caitlyn has been a very productive member on both ends of the court and seems to have a nose for finding the ball and being in the right place for it.  She has been near the top statistically on our team in various categories.”

The Warriors trailed by 20 at the break, 41-21, and it got worse before it got better. The Rams scored 12 straight points to open the second half before Ozaukee got a basket from Gabby Klas at the 11:51 mark. At that point, the Rams led by 30 points, 53-23.

“Random Lake came out with a level of energy and intensity in the first half of the game that we were not able to match. It was a punch in the face and that never feels good,” Pollard said.

“Hats off to coach (Trina) Van Horn and her team. They were certainly the better team. We had watched a lot of film on them knowing this was going to be a great match-up, but they played above what our staff had seen on film.”

Klas finished with 15 points. Natalie Miller had seven rebounds and five assists. Cami Miller pulled down seven boards and made four steals.

“This was certainly a character-building game for our team and I was proud of the team for not quitting and giving it their best shot for all 36 minutes,” Pollard said.

Abby Borchardt led the Rams with 15 points. McKenna Armstrong had 13 points and Ashley Gruman had 11.

Random Lake sits atop the Big East Conference South Division with a 6-0 record. Ozaukee is in third at 2-3.

The Warriors host non-conference opponent Sheboygan Falls on Tuesday, Jan. 5. They host Big East foe Reedsville, 0-5 in the Big East North Division, on Thursday, Jan. 7, and play at Howards Grove, 4-0 in the Big East North, on Saturday, Jan. 9.
