Ozaukee evens score with Random Lake

A career offensive game by Bret Hamm led the Ozaukee High School boys’ basketball team to a 67-46 nonconference win at University Lake School Monday night.

“University Lake School is a solid three-point shooting team that challenged us to close out on their shooters,” Ozaukee coach Bob Domach said.

“I thought we really moved the ball well on offense.”

Hamm poured in 23 points to lead the way.

A strong defensive effort helped.

Domach praised Chase Miller for holding the Lakers’ leading scorer to eight points, 10 below his average.

Miller contributed on offense as well with seven points and six assists.

Braxton Gahan had nine rebounds.  Aaron Nehls and Connor Rennicke each scored seven points.

The Lakers fell to 13-6 overall.

Warriors take down a rival

The Warriors enacted revenge on visiting Random Lake on Feb. 15.

The host Warriors earned a 62-45 Big East Conference win in a battle of the two bottom teams in the South Division.

That evened the series between the rivals after the Rams won on a buzzer-beating layup after an air-balled three-pointer in Random Lake on jan. 7.

Ozaukee coach Bob Domach said win was “one of our most complete games of the year.

“I thought Matt Miller really played well on both ends of the court.”

Miller, a senior, led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“It was nice to get the “Jersey” back into our trophy case,” Domach said of the traveling trophy consisting of an Ozaukee and Random Lake jersey sewn together.

Ozaukee led, 28-18, at the break.

Rennicke scored 12 points for Ozaukee.

Bret Hamm scored nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Jesse Schauer added nine points and six steals. Gahan scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Matt Merlo led the Rams with 26 points. He was the only Ram to score more than six. Random Lake is 4-14 in the Big East.

Oostburg shuts down the Warriors

Last Friday, Ozaukee lost at Oostburg, 56-38.  

“Oostburg is a very well coached team. They had a terrific game plan and we couldn’t seem to make any runs against them,” Domach said.

“We turned the ball over way too much and didn’t close out on their shooters.”

The Warriors had a hard time finding the basket in the first half and trailed, 29-15, at halftime.

Hamm led the Warriors with 13 points and seven rebounds. He spent much of the first half on the bench with three fouls.  

Rennicke scored nine points and Gahan had seven rebounds.

Luke Van Ess led the Flying Dutchmen with 16 points. Ben Batzner and Aiden Van Ess each finished with 11 points.  

Ozaukee, 6-12 in the Big East and 10-13 ovdrall, will close the regular season by hosting Sheboygan Christian Thursday for senior night.

On Tuesday, March 1, the No. 11-seeded Warriors will play at No. 6 Living Word Lutheran (12-11) in the Division 4 playoffs.

The winner of plays at No. 3 Howards Grove (19-3) on Friday, March 4. The Warriors lost at Howards Grove, 69-48, on Feb. 1.
