Ozaukee’s most prolific scorer honored

On the night the Ozaukee High School boys’ basketball team honored its all-time leading scorer, the Warriors took care of business against St. Lawrence Seminary 68-21.

Noah Miller, a 2021 graduate, was recognized for setting the school’s all-time scoring record last season. On Monday, fans got to cheer for the accomplishment since attendance restrictions due to the pandemic lifted this season.

Miller holds several school records. He has the most points with 1,574 while 2020 graduate Becca Schauer is second with 1,497.

For boys’ records, he has the most steals (227), three-pointers made (284), field goals made (577) and games played (91).

“It was a perfect night to honor Noah Miller for all of his basketball accomplishments,” Ozaukee coach Bob Domach said.

“He is a great role model for our program.”

Miller, a start shortsop who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round in summer, spent time during and after the game signing cards that listed his many records.

 As for the current team, all the Warriors saw action.

“Everyone played extensive minutes and everyone scored,” Domach said. “It was great to see players being rewarded for their hard work in practice.”

Bret Hamm recorded his second double-double in as many games to lead the Warriors. He scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds, along with three steals and three assists.

Connor Rennicke scored 12 points. Matt Miller and Chase Miller each scored eight. Matt had five rebounds and five steals.

Mason Norwood had eight rebounds off the bench. Mason Pantle had six rebounds.

The Warriors split a pair of Big East Conference games last week.

On Dec. 7, Ozaukee earned a 55-36 win over visiting Mishicot, their first victory of the season.

Last Thursday, the Warriors lost to Sheboygan Lutheran, 72-55.

Ozaukee got off to a slow start against Mishicot.

“We started slow, but finished with great balanced scoring,” Domach said.

The teams battled to a 23-23 tie at halftime.

“It was our first game seeing a zone, but we figured it out in the second half,” Domach said.

The Warriors were led by a pair of sophomores. Sawyer Kowalkowski had a team-high 11 points, including a trio of three-point baskets. Hamm added 10 second-half points and had seven rebounds.

The Warriors got nine points from Rennicke, eight from Chase Miller, seven from Matt Miller and six from Braxton Gahan. Rennicke and Gahan each finished with seven rebounds.  

The Indians were led by Maxwell Seib with 12 points.

 When the Warriors hosted Sheboygan Lutheran last Thursday, they knew they were in for a battle.

“We competed well against the second-ranked team in the state in Division 4,” Domach said.

“I was not happy with the outcome, but I think we will take valuable lessons that will make us better moving forward.”

The Warriors were down, 40-26, at halftime but stayed closer in the second half.

Hamm turned in the best offensive game of his varsity career with 18 points. He added 10 rebounds and four assists.  

Kowalkowski scored 10 points. Chase Miller and Gahan each scored nine, and Gahan had seven rebounds. Rennicke had seven points. Jesse Schauer had six assists.

Ozaukee’s defense held high-scoring Casey Verhagen under his scoring average, but he still finished with 20 points.  

The Warriors, 2-3 overall, play at Kohler on Thursday and on Monday, Dec. 20, host rival Cedar Grove-Belgium.
