Oil painter is center’s artist of the month

Painter Slobodan “Bob” Markovic is the October artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

A lifelong artist and painter, Markovic lives and works in Racine. His recent work in oil, acrylic and mixed media is inspired largely by the landscapes and natural environment of southern Wisconsin.

Markovic said he starts working without reference or plan,

“I start by layering paint, pushing it around using various tools — brushes, knives, trowels, sticks — until a history of marks and colors cover the support,” he said. “This, then, becomes the architecture that underlies and animates the final layers. These final layers, which have trended more and more towards simplification, are not the end. The ‘finish’ only comes when a viewer stands in front of the work and layers their thoughts and feelings, their histories on it.”

Markovic will demonstrate his art from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 14 and 15; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23; and noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

He will also lead a “Working with Oil and Cold Wax” workshop from 1 to 4 p.m.  Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The hands-on class, intended for beginners and experienced oil painters, introduces participants to the fundamentals of working with cold wax medium and oil paint. The workshop will explore the history and archival qualities of wax, proper surface preparation and the tools and techniques used to spread and manipulate paint.

Participants should come prepared to get messy and are encouraged to wear painting clothes or bring an apron. Most supplies will be provided.

Markovic invites participants to bring their favorite oil paint colors, silicone brushes, bowl scrapers and both firm and soft brushes.

The fee is $65 for center members and $75 for nonmembers.

For more information or to register for the workshop, call (262) 375-3676 or visit www.CedarburgCulturalCenter.org.

The center is at W62 N546 Washington Ave.
