Oil painter is artist of the month for August

Kewaskum oil painter Steve Gerhartz is the August artist-in-residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Gerhartz, an artist and nature enthusiast, began painting in the mid 1980’s as a high school student. He was 14 when his first landscape painting experience occurred during a November snow squall, igniting a passion for painting outdoors.
He attended the Lyme Academy in Old Lyme, Conn., and a year after graduation he was awarded the John Stobart Outdoor Painting Fellowship.
Much of Gerhartz’s inspiration comes from the light quality at the different times of day and during changing seasons.
“I am constantly learning from nature and understanding what happens in certain lighting conditions. I paint on location in all sizes — even very large paintings are started outside. There is nothing quite as emotional for me as working on a large painting outdoors, trying to capture all that form and space into a painting,” he said.
Gerhartz’s interest in woodworking has carried through to his work in carving frames for his paintings.
Gerhartz will work at the center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 9 and 10, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug.17.
He will also hold a workshop on beginning portraiture from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept 11. Supplies are included for acrylic painting, but those attending may paint in oils.  The fee is $44 for center members or $53 for nonmembers.
