Port Washington’s softball program has a new leader, and he’s taking over mostly a new team.
Ben Navigato brings five years of experience in coaching youth programs in the Wheaton/Naperville, Illinois area to Port. This is his first high school head coaching job.
“I’m very excited to be the head coach of the softball team I think I will bring a positive attitude for these girls and hopefully a winning program to Port Washington High School,” Navigato said.
Naviagto takes over for Bob Snook, who left after his daughter Kate, graduated.
Kate Snook made the North Shore Conference second team last season, and three Pirates who earned honorable mention also graduated, including catcher Erin Jozwowski, infielder Karley Lehitkangas and utility player Haley Erlandson.
Port returns NSC second-team outfielder Maggie Noll for her senior season.
“Maggie is one of are captains I am expecting a lot out of this year,” Navigato said.
Last year’s No. 2 pitcher Brianna Heinen takes over as this year’s starter, but Navigato said he has three quality pitchers. Others include senior Morgan Esselman and sophomore Emma Uselding.
Esselman will play second base, and Uselding will play outfield.
Noll, Heinen and Esselman are the team captains.
Sophomore shortstop Keelie Schumacher will hit leadoff and “is going to be a big part of are team this year and up and coming years,” Navigato said.
Senior Alyssa Engels and freshman Tessa Egerer are listed at first base.
Outfielders include seniors Samantha Martin and Holly Buczek and freshmen Jojo Czarnecki and Hope Christiansen.
Senior Leanne Cook and freshman Morgan Stone are catchers.
“Our strengths are hitting speed and defense,” Navigato said.
In addition to leading the varsity program, Navigato said he wants the youth program to grow.
“It’s a new program. A lot of things need to be done,” he said.
“I’ve got a lot of young girls, which I like. They’re going to grow this program.”
Navigato has established some targets for the Pirates this season.
“Team goals are to play with a lot of heart and positive attitude. My goal for the team to be over 500 or better,” he said.
Navigato is a regional sales representative for Culligan. He moved to the city from Wheaton/Naperville five years ago in looking for a smaller place to live.
He has two daughters and his new wife has three daughters.
“We fell in love with Port,” he said.
The Pirates are scheduled to start the season against Divine Savior Holy Angels at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. They play at Kettle Moraine Lutheran at 10 a.m. on Saturday, play at Homestead at 4:30 p.m. Monday and host Whitefish Bay at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
