Nature decorated for the season
Two days before the winter solstice arrived on Saturday, a surprisingly heavy lake-effect snowfall decorated the Sauk Creek Nature Preserve for the season. The banks of the creek were dressed in a brilliant mantle of white and wild plants, bushes and branches were daubed with a natural version of flocking on a Christmas tree. The 27-acre preserve, an island of undisturbed nature in the Town of Port Washington, is a quiet retreat that is home to an eclectic assortment of flora and fauna. The latter includes, besides the expected numbers of whitetail deer, families of red foxes. Photos by Bill Schanen IV
