Melvin N. ‘Mel’ Prom

Melvin “Mel” Prom of Port Washington, Wis., passed away on Feb. 3, 2023, at Azura Fox Point.  He was 89 years old.

Mel was born in Belgium, Wis., to William and Josephine Lesch Prom on May 28, 1933. 

He married Margaret “Buz” Serres in 1957 and was the proud father to four daughters,  Liane (Charles) Baranek, Julie Muller, Amy (Robert) Owens and Catherine (Tom) Pujanauski.

He was grandpa to 10 grandchildren,   Jaime Gallun, Daniel Baranek, Kasey Meyer, Kelly Buckel, Nicole Calbow, Julia McMahon, Michelle Gerver, Ryan Owens, Alison Pujanauski and Emily Pujanauski. He is further survived by 11 great-grandchildren, his brother Syl Prom, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Diane Prom and his brother Jim Prom.

Throughout his life, Mel worked in construction and sales, and after his retirement he worked part time at Ace Hardware in Mequon, where he was known as the “Weber Grill Guy.” 

Mel was a proud Korean War veteran, serving active duty with the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He had the thrill of his lifetime going on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with his grandson, Daniel, as his guardian.

In his leisure time Mel enjoyed a good game of cribbage and cherished many, many years of camping with Buz, his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

He also served as a City of Port Washington alderman for many years.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington.

A visitation will precede the service at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m.

He will be laid to rest with military honors at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Washington.
