Mayoral race is only contest on Port ballot

There will be one race on the April 6 ballot in the City of Port Washington as two men — Ald. Dan Benning and Plan Commission member Ted Neitzke — vie to succeed Marty Becker as mayor.

Becker, who served one term, announced last year that he was moving from the city and would not seek re-election.

Neitzke, of 513 Brentwood Ct., has been the chief executive officer of CESA 6, which provides collaborative services for public and parochial schools and nonprofit organizations, since 2016.

He was a Port Washington alderman for one term in the mid-1990s and served as council president.

Benning, 1012 Jade St., who has represented the city’s 4th District since 2017, worked in information technology leadership at Johnson Controls for 30 years, retiring in 2019. He currently works part-time at Eernisse Funeral Home and with a professional fireworks crew.

He has been an active member of the Common Council, serving on a number of committees, including the Finance and License Committee.

While there will be a race for the mayor’s seat, there won’t be any for the aldermanic seats up in the spring election.

The only candidates filing for those seats are incumbents — 1st District Ald. Deb Postl, 3rd District Ald. Mike Gasper, 5th District Ald. Jonathan Pleitner and 7th District Ald. John Sigwart.

The mayor serves a three-year term while aldermen serve two-year terms.

Likewise, the Town of Port Washington’s spring ballot will only feature incumbents.

Filing nomination papers for the election are Town Chairman Mike Didier and supervisors Greg Welton and Gary Schlenvogt.

Town officials are elected for two-year terms.
