Mattie Fleischmann
Mattie L. Fleischmann died Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Ellen’s Home in Port Washington. She was 82.
Mrs. Fleischmann was born on May 16, 1936, in Laurinburg, N.C., the daughter of John and Mary “Magaline” Clark Smith.
On June 29, 1958, she married William L. Fleischmann of Milwaukee in Laurinburg. The two met on a blind date while Mr. Fleischmann was in the Army and stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.
In 1960, they moved to Port Washington both getting jobs at Tecumseh Manufacturing in Grafton.
Mr. Fleischmann worked there for 44 years, his son Bill, said.
Mrs. Fleischmann went on to work at Kleen Test Products in Port Washington and at Port Washington High School in the lunchroom while her son, Bill, attended school there.
She also was bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Fleischmann Custom Rod and Reel Repair, which he ran out of their home on Norport Drive.
Mr. Fleischmann died on Jan. 28, 2013.
Mrs. Fleischmann was an active participant with her husband in the Port Washington Lions Club.
She enjoyed making her house a home and was content spending time in her flower garden, taking care of her houseplants and watching after her children, her son said.
“She very much kept to herself,” he said. “She took pride in her home and her children. What little that she did, she did very well. ”
She was a constant presence at her sons’ football games and wrestling matches, he said.
“She was our biggest cheerleader and supporter,” he said. “You could definitely hear her. “She had a voice you could always hear. It wasn’t the loudest, but you always knew it was her.”
Mrs. Fleischmann is survived by her sons Leonard (Keri) of Lake Church, Jeffrey (Jill) and William J. (Ann), both of Port Washington; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Mary (Harry) Dwyer and Rosie Lewis, and brother Ronnie Smith, all of Laurinburg; and brother-in-law Tom (Karen) Fleischmann of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Joyce Fleischman brothers Bobbie and James Smith and brother-in-law Ray Lewis.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Poole Funeral Home and Crematory in Port Washington. The Rev. Tom Fleischmann will preside.
Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Port Washington.
Memorials to the Port Washington Lions Club are suggested.
