Mary Hazen

Mary L. Hazen, 74, died of cancer on Friday, June 1, at her Oak Court residence in Port Washington.
Ms. Hazen was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Dec. 26, 1943, to Joseph and Kathryn Kelly Bartolott.
She worked as a dietician before marrying John Hazen in Bethlehem, Pa. The couple settled in Elmhurst, Ill.
Ms. Hazen was active in the Girl Scouts of America and volunteered at a local library in Illinois, her family said.
In 1990, she moved to Port Washington and became the manager of a group home on the north side where she worked closely with people with disabilities.
In her retirement, Ms. Hazen continued helping others and was a volunteer with COPE. She often attended services at First Congregational Church in Port Washington, and was an avid reader.
According to her family, she had strong opinions about local and current events.
She loved nature and felt a responsibility to the environment and the conservation movement by helping take care of the world.
She helped raise her grandchildren and loved spending time with them whenever she was able to.
Ms. Hazen is survived by her children Marcia (Joseph) Porebski of Chicago, Ill., Sandra (Corey) Frey of Fredonia, and John (Cindee) of Bensenville, Ill.
She is further survived by four grandchildren; sisters Patricia Scott of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Barbara (Wayne) Mebane of Cecil, Pa.; and brother-in-law Rene Saquin of Kane, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joan Saquin.
A private family service was held Sunday, June 10.
Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington, handled the arrangements.
