Margaret M. “Buz” Prom of Port Washington passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at Harbor Cove in Port Washington, where she had resided for the last 2½ years. She was 86 years old.

She was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 16, 1937, the daughter of Edward and Helen (Enders) Serres.

Always as busy as a bee, she earned herself the nickname Buz at a young age. She grew up in Port Washington and attended local schools, graduating from Port Washington High School with the Class of 1956.

On Nov. 16, 1957, she married Melvin Prom.  The couple settled in Port and raised their family of four daughters.

Mel preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2023.

Buz began as a dispatcher for the Port Washington Police Department in 1975. She served faithfully for more than 35 years until her retirement in 2003.

After retirement, she worked as the secretary for the Port Washington Fire Department for several years.

Buz possessed an innate creativity and could often be found engrossed in craft projects, indulging her artistic side. She had a keen intellect and would spend her leisure time reading or challenging herself with crossword puzzles. She enjoyed cooking and baking, collecting recipes and writing witty short poems for family members.

Buz and Mel loved camping with their family and began many traditions such as ghost stories around the fire, bingo games, making blueberry fritters and rafting on the Wolf River.

Those left to treasure her memory include her four daughters, Liane (Charles) Baranek, Julie Muller, Amy (Robert) Owens and Catherine (Tom) Pujanauski and 10 grandchildren, Jaime Gallun, Daniel Baranek, Kasey Meyer, Kelly Buckel, Nicole Calbow, Julia McMahon, Michelle Gerver, Ryan Owens, Alison Pujanauskiand Emily Pujanauski.

She is further survived by 14 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Syl Prom, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Buz was preceded in death by her husband Mel, brother James Serres and her parents.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside.

The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Buz will be laid to rest with her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

If desired, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association in her name.

The family would like to extend their special thanks to Jen Baranek for all the loving care and attention she provided.
