Luxembourg Fest features special tribute
This year’s Luxembourg Fest will include a couple of new elements to honor Luxembourg heritage that encompasses much of Belgium.
The most noticeable feature is the series of metallic photos lining the walkway outside the Luxembourg American Cultural Center.
The exhibit called Grand Duke Jean: A Life of Service (1921-2019) opened Aug. 1 and will be on display until Sept. 7.
The 20-photo exhibit was created with photos from the Grand Ducal Court and the Phototheque of the City of Luxembourg. It was displayed in front of Luxembourg City Hall after the Grand Duke died April 23.
After the 3.5-by-4.5-foot photos were dismounted, they were given to the Luxembourg American Cultural Society.
Jean served as Grand Duke from 1964 to 2000, when he was succeeded by his son Henri.
Under Jean, Luxembourg developed its financial market. He was also Chief Scout of the Luxembourg Boy Scouts Association and was on the International Olympic Committee.
The other new element is free wagon rides to the LACS.
The annual treipen-eating contest at noon Saturday will feature Luxembourgish contestants for the first time.
The annual parade is at 10 a.m. Saturday. Music, food, crafts, a car show, kids’ zone and helicopter rides are also offered throughout the weekend at Community Park. A polka Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, capped by the crowning of the Duke and Duchess.
