LuCele Sabel

Former Port Washington resident LuCele Sabel, 91, died of heart complications at her Arizona City home on Monday, Oct. 8.

Mrs. Sabel was born in Port Washington on April 11, 1927, to Emil “Pete” and Frances Mayer Poull.

During her youth, she helped her parents run the Mayer Hotel, today The Port Hotel.

She graduated from Port Washington High School in 1945 and from Mount Mary University in 1949.

On April 15, 1950, she married Marvin Sabel at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington.

“She really loved living in Port and raising her family of six there,” her son Paul said.

When she wasn’t busy taking care of her children, Mrs. Sabel enjoyed playing bridge with friends and golfing at Hawthorne Hills Golf Course in Saukville.

After a snowstorm in 1973, the family decided to move to Arizona, where they used to spend time for vacation.

“Dad said we had enough of the snow,” her son said.

In Arizona, Mrs. Sabel served as a lector and Eucharistic minister for 30 years at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Eloy, Ariz.

Mrs. Sabel is survived by her children Mary Sabel of Mesa, Ariz., Paul (Claudine) of Arizona City, Ariz., Mark (Laurie) of St. Croix Falls, Kris (Ruth) of Avon, Colo., and Kurt (Christine) of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren Erica (Trevor) Dickman, Nicole (Cameron) Sanders, Matthew Sabel, Ben (Kelly) Sabel, Valerie (Kris) Middleton, and Ryan and Max Sabel; 10 great-grandchildren and sister Shirley Greiveldinger of Port Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin and son John.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Eloy, Ariz.

A reception will follow at Arizona City Golf Club.

Donations to Compassus Hospice in Casa Grande, Ariz., are suggested.
