Saukville was one of 14 fire departments that responded to a structure fire that gutted the West Bend Lakes Golf Club clubhouse and restaurant at 1241 Hwy. 33 in the Town of Trenton on Sunday, March 14.
A caller notified the Washington County Sheriff’s Department just before 2 p.m. that smoke was coming from the roof of the bar area, according to a department press release.
A Newburg police officer was the first to arrive and saw flames and smoke in the kitchen behind the exhaust hood of the deep fryers. About 20 people were evacuated from the building without injury, the press release said.
The two-story structure includes a pro shop, bar, kitchen and dining area. The fire quickly spread into the attic rafters, then through the roof.
Firefighters soon arrived on scene and extinguished the fire, which was contained to the main building and did not spread to any outbuildings.
Officials deemed the building and its contents a total loss, the press release stated.
The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Newburg Fire Department.
Other fire departments responding include those from Newburg, West Bend, Fredonia, Grafton, Cedarburg, Port Washington, Kewaskum, Allenton, Boltonville, Filmore, Waubeka, Slinger and Hartford. WE Energies assisted at the scene.
