It’s been a tough year for Robert Lindbloom and his wife Tracie, but his fellow Fredonia firefighters are doing their part to help.

In March, Lindbloom found a bean-sized lump under his arm. He and his doctor thought it was just an infection, but it grew to the size of a pingpong ball. This summer it was deemed cancerous sarcoma and has grown to the size of an egg, he said.

“But they have no idea exactly what kind of cancer it is or exactly how to treat it,” Lindbloom said. “The doctors are baffled.”

Lindbloom has had eight radiation treatments and numerous doctor visits. Another 15 treatments are scheduled and surgery is planned in November to remove the growth. Chemotherapy is possible after that.

“Hopefully, the surgery will take care of it,” he said. “But if I have to (undergo chemotherapy) I have to.”

The bills are piling up, Lindbloom said. Complicating matters is a knee injury that’s kept Lindbloom, who works as a machinist in Grafton, from firefighting duties. Plus, his wife suffers from fibromyalgia and dislocated an ankle this year, which required surgery.

To help, members of the Fredonia Fire Department started a GoFundMe page to benefit Lindbloom. As of Wednesday morning, the page had raised $2,300 of its $3,500 goal.

The page describes Lindbloom as “one of our most dedicated members; someone who is frequently the first to a call, raises a hand when volunteers are needed, and willing to cover a shift for anyone.”

Lindbloom, who lives in Fredonia, said he is thankful for the assistance.

“The fire department is one big family,” he said. “Fredonia is a good community that sticks together.”
