Library to host storytimes for kids, events for teens and adults

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will host storytimes throughout October as well as a number of other programs for people of all ages.

Morning storytimes, which are held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 31, give children ages 2 to 5 and their caregivers the opportunity to enjoy rhymes, songs, dancing and stories.

Families are invited to evening storytimes from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 1.

Children can come dressed in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animals to hear a story and sing songs before bedtime.

Registration for the free storytimes can be done in person or by calling the library at 262-284-6022.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, the library will host Chain Reaction: Cobra Weave for teenagers ages 12 to 18.

The program will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and explore the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy by strategically weaving craft sticks into a pattern known as a cobra weave. Participants will find outwhat happens when potential energy is released and whether a chain reaction can be triggered.

The library will celebrate the solar eclipse the week of Oct. 8 by distributing a limited number of free solar viewing glasses available at its solar eclipse display.

Then on Saturday, Oct. 14, there will be an eclipse viewing event on the library lawns as well as various STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art and math — projects.

Free solar viewing glasses will be distributed at the viewing.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, growing garlic will be the subject of a webinar shown at the library.

The recorded program presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Horticulture Extension will explore the cultivation of garlic, which is easily grown and grows best when planted in fall.

The Recipe Club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 12 for a tasting of hors d’ oeuvres and dips in the community room.

Participants should bring their favorite party food and the recipe to share.

The library will host a watercolor painting class that will guide participants as they create an autumn birch tree scene from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.

The program is designed for beginners, although painters of all skill levels are welcome. The event is free and supplies are provided.

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the library will explore the history of humans with a  discussion of Yuval Noah Harari’s “Sapiens: A  Brief History of Humankind.”

A least six species of humans inhabited Earth 100,000 years ago, yet today there is only one. What happened to the others and what could happen to us?

The library will host a UW-Madison Horticulture Extension gardening webinar on the importance of understanding your soil on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Participants will learn about important soil characteristics, organic matter and fertilization to improve garden soil and productivity.

The program will be shown in the community room from 11 a.m. to noon.

It’s mocktail hour on the patio of the library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.

A mixologist from MJ’s Bar and Grill in Saukville will teach participants how to make nonalcoholic cocktails, serve samples and share the recipes.

The library will show a webinar on garden cleanup from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The program is presented by the UW-Madison Horticulture Extension and focuses on how to approach garden and yard cleanup while keeping in mind plant diseases, insects, winter interest and wildlife food.

S’mores and spooking stories are on tap at the library from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, to celebrate a day off of school on Friday and the Halloween season.

Food and supplies are provided.

Mischief and Magic will present a noon Halloween show at the library on Saturday Oct. 28.

The group’s comedy magic show features illusions with a side-splitting twist that will leave the audience baffled and in stitches.

Costumes are encouraged but not required for the all-ages show.
