Library has paper arts programs, blood drive planned for September

Paper arts, a blood drive and more are on tap during September at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington.

The blood drive will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

The drive will  be run by Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin.

An autumn series of programs on paper arts kicks off from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, with a program on creating a personal journal.

Those attending will design journal covers using old book covers, then fill the books and bind the journals.

The class is intended for those 14 and older. Advance registration is requested.

Youth activities 

Storytimes will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from Sept. 15 to Nov. 18.

The sessions for children of preschool age includes stories and crafts that revolve around a different theme each week. 

The Lego Building Club will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

Youngsters 5 and older may use the library’s Legos to design and build something, then place it on display.

A sensory playtime will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 25.

The playtime includes a variety of tactile activity stations for children younger than 13 to explore with their caregiver. 

The Pokémon Club will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5.

Youngsters may bring their Pokémon cards, decks and binders for a morning of card trading. By attending, they will get a new-to-them Pokémon card from the library.

A STEM Studio class to make Ivory soap boats will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. 

The monthly drop-in program is for children ages 8 to 12 who like to create art and build projects. 

All supplies provided by the library. “Gear Up For School “ is the theme for a 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, program where youngsters 13 and younger can personalizing and decorating their school gear. They can craft tin can pencil holders and provide stickers to add flair to folders, notebooks and water bottles. 

Family bingo with a football theme will be placed at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21. The winners will be awarded candy and prizes.

Adult and teen activities 

A grief support group will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 2 and 16.

The free group is facilitated by Compassus Hospice. 

The D&D PW Bookwyrms group will meet from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. The group for local game enthusiasts is open to players of all skill levels.

Job seeking assistance will be provided by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the Job Center of Wisconsin from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24.

Those attending are asked to call ahead to book a time slot.

A Short Story Hour will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Port Washington Senior Center. 

The Friday Morning Book Talk group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11.

The Novel Ideas Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21.

The book to be discussed by the book clubs will be available at the library. 

The Bring Your Own Book Club  meets at Cavelier Wine Bar at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. 

Those attending are asked to share the book they are currently reading or just finished, no matter the genre.  

 A Work in Progress Wednesday where creators can work on their projects — knitting, crocheting, painting, drawing, writing or something else — together will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Teen Café sessions will be held from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. Thursdays for students in grades seven through 12.

The cafes include snacks and activities, including games, crafts, kahoot trivia, movies and more. The theme for September is video games.

“Medicare 101” will for people getting close to signing on to the program will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. 

A Memory Café for people living with  memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21.

“Recognizing Everyday Scams” will be taught by representatives of Kohler Credit Union from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.

A Port Conversations program on artificial intelligence will be held from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.

Peter Vander Velden, AI enablement lead and administrative AI solutions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss the basics of AI, what it is, how it works and how it is affecting our world today.
