LETTERS: Make politicians hear the call: Do something about guns now

To Ozaukee Press:

It won’t be long before there is another mass shooting. The first thing out of many survivors’ mouths and those who lost loved ones is, “I never thought this would happen here.”

It can happen anywhere, at any time, to any people. Will you wait until the NRA demand for “freedom” surrounding gun regulation pierces your heart? Demand that your elected representatives “do something,” as was chanted in Dayton.

As always, Democrats are trying and Republicans are stymying—talking about everything but guns. Guns, not mental illness, are the common denominator in almost all mass killings.

How mentally ill was the guy who planned and executed the killing of 58 and wounding 422 in Las Vegas? How mentally ill was the young man who sat in religious devotion with welcoming African Americans and then slaughtered them?

Whether it is hate, mental illness or an unresolved motivation, the sanctioned romance with unregulated guns is the one common factor.

In Ozaukee County, due to gerrymandering, we have loyal Republicans representing us who are unlikely to do anything substantive about gun control, including U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman.

There were more people than I’ve seen before at two recent Grothman town halls. Many were there for the first time. They chanted at the end of one for him to “do something.” Matt Boor has already declared as a Democrat to run against Grothman. Let’s vote correctly in 2020.
