LETTERS: Local volunteer food packing effort feeding Nicaraguan kids

To Ozaukee Press:

Thank you to everyone who joined us packing meals for Feed My Starving Children at Portal in Grafton.

Over 500 volunteers packed meals, which cost 22 cents each and consisted of rice, soy, vegetables and vitamins.

We recently received notification that the 108,864 meals from our packing event on April 13 and 14 went to the country of Nicaragua. That is enough food to feed 298 kids every day for a year.

FMSC meals are distributed to children in nearly 70 countries through missionary partnerships in orphanages, schools, clinics, refugee camps and malnourishment centers.

Nicaragua, an impoverished but very beautiful Central American country, is the size of Pennsylvania and is the largest country in Central America. Outside of Haiti, Nicaragua is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A lack of health care, adequate housing and decent schools, coupled with a widespread lack of opportunity, are all major challenges to progress. Poor children in Nicaragua are extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases, malnutrition and a lack of clean water, which continues to pose some of the biggest threats to child survival.

Just at Portal alone, over 1,000,000 meals have been packed over the past nine years and have fed children all over the world. That’s an incredible impact that goes even beyond nourishing a child’s body.

Volunteers who packed these nutritious yet inexpensive meals had the opportunity to try this life-saving food.

Thank you to Portal, Inc. for the use of their facility, to those who joined us for these extraordinary days, to the wonderful donors who made it all possible with generous contributions totalling $25,500 and to Ozaukee Press for its editorial support and news and photo coverage.

It was an amazing and energetic experience.
