LETTERS: Band’s vaccination mandate is liberty-threatening bigotry

To Ozaukee Press:

I am writing out of concern for our liberties as yet another entity in Ozaukee County is mandating Covid vaccinations without any accommodation for religious or medical exemptions.

The Lakeshore Symphonic Band, a reputable group of musicians that rehearses in Cedarburg and performs throughout the area, sent a letter to its members (of which I am included) that we must be vaccinated or be placed on a leave of absence until at least fall 2022.

Where does this stop? What about vaccinations for other contagious viruses or diseases? What about asking all members to divulge their medical history?

While I respect and understand differences of opinion on masking, vaccinations and treatments for Covid and have felt the loss of friends and acquaintances who died from Covid, I must draw the line at taking away a person’s ability to make a living, engage in commerce or, in this case, pursue happiness and serve their community just because they aren’t aligned with a board of directors or a bureaucrat.

We have many smart, kind folks in our community who can look at their risk factors, review scientific data, talk with their doctors and examine their own deeply held convictions to make informed decisions.

If we truly want diversity and inclusion in our community, this form of bigotry and discrimination must be called out every time it happens. I hope that the Lakeshore band and other local entities with mandates will reconsider, and I hope that those reading this will think twice before supporting them. Freedom is fragile, as is evident in our society right now, but it is worth fighting for.
