LETTER: Warm memories of a one-room school, store with penny candy

To Ozaukee Press:

 I read with great interest the recent letter to the editor from Barbara Roob about Knellsville.

I also attended the one-room Knellsville school, but only until the third grade. Miss Viola Eidenberger was a great teacher.

Msgr. Holfeltz, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish at that time, decreed that everyone had to send their children to St. Mary’s School or be excommunicated.

So in the middle of my third grade I found myself in the third grade classroom taught by the nuns of Notre Dame.

Those sisters had about 50 students at that time, and it was stunningly not fun for a little 7-year-old girl, as the Knellsville school was attended by many of my cousins, children of the Henry Egerer family and other families who were my friends and neighbors.

My aunt and uncle, Nick and Rosa Lauters, lived right next to the Knellsville school. After school, I so enjoyed spending my pennies at the Johannes store.

They always had penny candy.

By the way, my parents, Liz and Carl Lauters, met at the dance hall in Knellsville. My friend Violet Meinert lived in one of the several houses in Knellsville.

I am going to be 100 years old in January, so I have great memories of Knellsville.
