LETTER: They gave the money away, now we face $1 trillion deficit

To Ozaukee Press:

Trump has lied more than 15,000 documented times, including the lie about the greatness of his 2017 tax bill, which has done nothing but transfer a lot of borrowed money to the wealthy and produce a huge deficit.

Something is wrong when the deficit, inflated by the tax cut for corporations and the wealthy, reaches $984 billion and is expected to be over $1 trillion for the next few years. Trump and his sycophants in the Republican Party promised us that he would make the greatest economy in the world and would do so in a way that all his tax cuts would “pay for themselves.” They haven’t.

Unlike Trump, numbers don’t lie. The average tax paid by corporations in 2018 was 11.3%, and 91 large, profitable corporations paid nothing. No wonder the federal government has to borrow in order to function.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are targeting programs that help the less fortunate among us as unaffordable. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that provides food stamps is another social safety net that Trump and his supporters claim we can’t afford. Of course, we can’t. They gave all the money away. Their mantra of “all taxes are bad” is a smokescreen to hide the truth that they just don’t want to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
